Sport Specific Programmes
February 27, 2010 No CommentsHaving a sport specific goal can often be a great motivator to get in the gym! We deal with people who play sport for fun through to first class professional athletes. As a fitness coach, the key to preparing someone for a sporting event is understanding the physical demands of the sport in question. A programme suitable for a tri-athlete will look very different to a programme suitable for a martial artist!
We start by laying all of the main areas of fitness out on the table and choose the most relevant ones to include within the athletes programme. Some of these include: Relative strength, power, strength endurance, aerobic endurance, power endurance and hypertrophy.
Having established which areas of fitness (above) are most applicable to our athlete we go about testing their muscular strength and balance. This is called a Structural Balance Assessment (This was created by World famous strength coach Charles Poliquin). This assessment tests all areas of your strength symmetry ranging from pushing, pulling and squatting strength through to ankle, knee, hip and shoulder stability. All of these areas are crucial to making an athlete stronger, leaner, more powerful and injury free! The result to the structural balance assessment provides us with the backbone to our athletes exercise programme!
The final stage to creating a functional training programme for our athlete is to take their body fat readings. At Dave Fletcher Personal Training, we use Bio Signature (also created by Charles Poliquin) to link areas of fat storage on the body to hormonal imbalances. We will establish where and why our athletes store fat where they do and go about creating nutrition and supplement programmes based on the results!
Most of our athletes (male and female) need to be stronger/more powerful and lighter. The depth of our assessments (Structural Balance and BioSignature) will allow us to achieve such demands and ensure our athletes keep bringing home the trophies.
